They are drawn by a pseudo-reflective shader in-game, and are left black in the texture because there was no need to draw them in there.

I noticed that the forms of Bowser and the Koopalings...all have black collar studs as opposed to white? Is that how they are in-game, or is that an error?

Oh, gosh no they started leakin' them :( Well, I've already get most of karts and bikes models because I ported into mkwii... I think they won't be unique anymore. It's time to upload some.

Depends on how you do it. If you can fully optimize an import in 3DS Max, you're probably good to go. Mostly the export to Blender breaks model's bones / resets them back to 0,0,0.
