I know I've ranted about this item in the past, but seriously, the Blooper is a terrible item. First off, in some games, it does jack squat. I know it's been buffed in Mario Kart 8 to worsen traction and/or handling, but even with this buff, that still doesn't change the fact that the Blooper is terrible because even in games where it covers up more of the screen, there is so much going against the item.

A lot of the tracks in Mario Kart, especially the newer games, have Dash Panels you can use, and by hitting just one of them, that ink is just gone. Tracks with tons of Dash Panels like Wii Moonview Highway or 3DS Rainbow Road? Forget it. Even on tracks with water like DS Cheep Cheep Beach or Wii Koopa Cape, there is no way that ink is staying on your screen for more than a second.

But that's just a minor inconvenience compared to the bigger problem I have with the item. The main problem I have with the Blooper is that there is a disproportionate gap between how good it is against experienced players vs how good it is against new players, which, combined with the handling/traction worsening effect, affects new players particularly badly.

To illustrate how the Blooper goes against the principles of Mario Kart item design to actively make the game worse, consider the following hypothetical situations. First, imagine you're a new player who is unfamiliar with the track. Not knowing the layout of the courses to begin with is already unfair when you get inked by a Blooper, but combine that with the Blooper worsening your handling and/or traction, it becomes a death sentence for you. You're basically done for when that ink hits your screen because you can't even stay on the track without going off-road or even falling off the track altogether in the first place. Now, imagine you're an experienced player who already knows the track. That Blooper ink is hardly going to do anything because you already have the track layouts memorized ahead of time.

This item is basically anti-Mario Kart in design because you look at items like the Lightning, an item that is very clearly designed to give even the worst players a fighting chance, but the Blooper completely spits on that design philosophy. It doesn't even feel good to use. You use it and feel nothing because it's such an unsatisfying item to get. Worse, it's obtainable in middle to back of the pack positions, so just know that any time you get a Blooper, you could be getting Triple Red Shells, Triple Mushrooms, Golden Mushrooms, Blue Spiny Shells, or Stars instead.

In short, the Blooper is one of the worst items Nintendo has ever added to the series because it disproportionately affects new players while hardly doing anything to experienced players, and I don't know why this item is still around. I would argue that Mario Kart would be better without the Blooper.
