i don't have high hopes for that happening since Foreman Spike's movie appearance didn't translate into any new game appearances.
You know what's weird? The Koopalings used to be in the same boat: obscure characters rarely referenced. Then they finally got used in NSMBWii, and suddenly Nintendo started using them in every game.
They should test the waters with obscure characters every once in a while, they might find their next mainstream hit doing that. For example, I wouldn't be surprised if Wart starts showing up everywhere because of his recent movie appearance.

He looks familiar
This model could have easily been used for the Little Mousers on Cheese Land when that course was brought to MK8. They didn't because they're cowards who will gladly sacrifice faithfulness if the alternative is using something less common in the brand. At least at that time they were.
