Since people don't know their stuff, I'll explain what's going on here.
The high-poly Sonic and Tails models WERE NOT used to make the sprites seen in X-Treme.
Sonic's model was used for the sprites that were made for Sonic Mars, however.
The models are sourced from Christian Senn's old subpage on his site: (Senntient) The Sonic X-treme Compendium.

It may not have “replaced” Sonic Adventure at all. It was being made by Sega Technical Institute in the USA, while Sonic Adventure was made directly by Sonic Team in Japan (except for the music). It could have bombed, causing them to go forward with Sonic Adventure anyway (Sega Japan was clearly skeptical of the project the whole time; they really only took interest with the boss engine, by which point it was too late).
Sonic X-Treme is such a weird case of a cancelled game. Really makes me wonder how different the Sonic franchise would be if this came out instead of Sonic Adventure. If it wasn't for this game's cancellation, would the modern era of Sonic ever even exist?

I think, for preservation purposes, we should overlook that. I mean, that’s how it’s stored in the game anyway, it’s not the submitter’s fault.
wait, who submitted the metal sonic boss arena? chances are it wont be approved, since its textures are lost.
