There is, thats why theres 3 obj files. You are correct regarding the concave polygon hardware quirk :) sonic3.obj should work.
Looks like something to do with the eyes? IIRC the original model (ab)used a quirk with the Saturn 3D rendering to make Sonic's eyes round without using a lot of quads. There should be an unedited version available as well, IMHO

The slanted eyes might be related to the rendering quirks of the Saturn's 3D hardware. Like, it'd probably translate it into a more rounded shape so it would look less slanted.
