Well, THAT'S certainly a unique way of putting it. Brawl's artstyle has always resonated with me as well, and if I'm being honest, some of the characters (such as Peach and Sheik, for example) actually look way better in this game than they do in Smash 4 and Ultimate. I always found Smash 4 and Ultimate's artstyles a little inconsistent regarding certain characters; whereas this game actually sticks to a consistent artstyle and actually accomplishes the difficult task of balancing the more cartoonish characters with the more realistic ones.
I have always LOVED Brawl's realistic artstyle; it succeeds where Mario Party 8 fails. In that game, while characters stay looking the exact same, the environments are very weirdly realistic, and the poor way that the graphics are handled has the textures looking quite rough and the game overall looking messy. Brawl, on the other hand, handles its style masterfully. Environments are crafted very well with great-looking textures, and most notably, the characters (like Mario here) strike a great balance between stylization and realism, staying true to their designs (or being a fusion of designs, in Snake's case) while receiving hefty touch-ups, which is overall helped by the INCREDIBLE model quality; the meshes have great polygon counts and textures are surprisingly high resolution, which really allows everything to shine. So, in conclusion? Best Mario model, and some of the best models for any character in this game overall.
Locked in Mario
Interestingly, Mario's body in this model is mostly just an edit of his body from Melee. You can kind of see from the wrinkles on his shirt and overalls that they effectively just re-textured the original model, edited the straps to be angled instead of rounded and swapped the head for his common GameCube/Wii era head. Also worth noting that Mario's Shadow model included with his files is also a leftover of his low-poly model from Melee and his armature is mostly the same structure down to the finger bones using two joints per finger rather than the usual three.

This is 100% one of my favorite ways the folks at Nintendo have portrayed me in games. This look of mine is amazing
