Why are you guys acting like the only other type of design it could have had as an evo are this or something edgy/epic.
I've seen fan design that make it not be just itself but bigger, and just make a goofy pokemon.

Also that hunting for Tsuchinokos is a traditional tourist trap in Japan, much like hunting for Big Foot. Obviously in every expedition they return empty-handed because it's a creature that does not exist, and even if it did it would be the most underwhelming cryptid ever: a fat-bodied snake, yippie-ki-yay.
Dunsparce exists literally as a joke from the developers: it's a particularly rare Pokémon to find but one that is totally worthless. Giving it any value by providing an evolution that looks cool or is remotely useful would be totally missing the point. Spoiler:(Of course, Game Freak might think they are being self-aware by making a "just gets bigger" evolution as a joke for a joke Pokémon, but how to they explain all of the many lazy, non-ironic, "just gets bigger" evolutions like Pawmot?)

Plus it's based on the Tsuchinoko, a snake youkai known to be as stubby as a large skink.
Honestly I can't think of a better possible evolution for Dunsparce. People wanted a Dunsparce evo to look awesome, but its whole identity is that it's just...there. So I'm glad that instead of an epic, over-the-top, edgy evolution, they just quadrupled down on what makes Dunsparce what it is. It's the perfect bit.

Because people have been waiting for a Dunsparce Evolution for more than 20 years. They took Pokemon like Farfetch'd and Yanma made them look awesome but with Dunsparce it's just....this.
