My favorite part of Melee was that the trophies were indeed separate models than the fighter models.
Interesting thing I found about Melee's trophies that seems less apparent in Brawl (Can't relate to Smash 4, haven't played that one yet) is Melee's trophies use relatively low resolution (or simplified, depending on the model) textures on high-poly, very detailed models.
For example, Melee's Kirby trophy you could like zoom in to see the "inside" of models. Best example is Kirby or the Ocarina of Time. They're hollow and have many vertexes, but use simple textures; whereas Brawl goes for a sort of photo-realistic approach; 'economic' meshes with high definition (for the era) textures.

I like how the main trophies about the characters don't use the same in game models like Brawl and Sm4sh do. They should bring that back if they do a Smash 5
