Yup, and i think it's more because there has been confusion between "Kyodai Pukupuku" (Boss Bass) and "Bakubaku" (Cheep Chomp) in Japan, than because of the new big Cheep Cheep enemy.
This is the same model as in SM64DS but retextured, right?
If that were the case, they wouldn't have made them similar to begin with. This is certainly to distinguish them from the generic big Cheep Cheeps on the tiny screen.
