Also I'm sure the textures go unfiltered in-game, so they aren't supposed to look this blurry

Yeah, they are ugly because those are the in game models, they are low poly and choppy to, for one, save on performance and also because it would be alot of wasted detail because its difficult to see that stuff on a 3DS screen.
