No, this is not from the DS. A lot of models in this game have a low quality due to how small everything is, and the original NSMB uses even lower quality. In fact, the original NSMB just uses sprites for Goombas.

Yes, that's exactly what this is. The final version of Prickly Goomba is named "kuribo_iga", so this was seemingly left in by mistake due to the similar name.
This looks veeeeeeeeeeeery similar to the Prickly Goombas, wonder if it was a prototypical design?
