My guess is it's because using the Samus Returns design likely would have meant making a whole new model from scratch or drastically upping the quality of the Samus Returns model.

ZTO I'm with you. I really don't like the other m design [it's very inorganic, and that doesn't line up with the lore of the nature loving chozo. Of course, throwing out cannon was other m's thing soooooooooooo]
samus strikes me as one of the characters that doesn't seem to be touched from wii u oh well models here I might as well directly compare them and see what we find
I wonder why they didn't use the samus returns design, so instead we get reminded of other m....again.
