Yeah, that's definitely a decent way to do it in Blender. I cut out the spots using Blender's knife tool since unfortunately an alpha mask wouldn't work for what I'm doing, but for general posing/animating that'd definitely be more than satisfactory. Also, it seems like the gradient (RFT texture) slowly rotates as it scrolls through, which is gonna be a pain to do in a game that doesn't support texture rotation... (pay attention to his chest here: https://youtu.be/DusFYO9ToJk?t=314)

By the way, I'm new to blender, so chances are I did multiple things wrong, but it works decently enough?

To both of you, I *kind of* made the ink scroll work (with the RFT texture)?? It took some adjustments of the textures in an external art program, it's super messy, though.
This drive link has photos of my nodes (I can upload a full screenshot if you'd like) and a gif of what it looks like (I don't think i animated the ink correctly haha)

Does anyone know how to use the RFT texture? I kinda got the shading to work and that's all I need to get it to look right.

Does anyone know how to recreate the scrolling fuzzy ooze on his shoulders/all over him like how it is in the boss fight? I can tell the areas appear on the raised normals, but I can't exactly get more than that. Circled what I'm talking about here: https://imgur.com/a/Og8xNQv

mr grizz lost his chromosomes

What are the "multimask_res4ch" textures?

egg!

"Mum said it's my turn to play Splatoon 3."

That last model looks so weird it's so funny

To clear up the confusion, the bottom model is shown Spoiler:during the cutscene after you defeated Mr. Grizz. Image in question looks like this: https://i.ibb.co/r6kdQhM/IMG-1643.jpg

ohhhh I think the one at the bottom is supposed to be, like, his fur is all wet. most furry animals look weird like that when their fur gets wet

I assume the fur uses tessellation

ZharK: mostly. but it still looks VERY strange

i wonder just how they did the furriness in this game... it kinda looks like how mario galaxy does it where it's just the body mesh with fur made more and more transparent with each copy of itself?? definitely not how they did it this time around but its something to think about

I'm guessing that abomination at the bottom is covered with the ooze in game...

It looks like the textured fur uses a parallax effect, which gives it a layered 3D look. I haven't tried to figure that out yet.
As for the fuzz around the model, it looks like fur cards are used on every edge of the model. A texture or vertex color is used to limit where the fur is. The fur is only around the edges of the model from where you're facing it.
This probably easy to do in blender, but I don't know how to use particle systems that well...
