@FerringtheSylvie that title goes to gyigas and maybe porky too

He's absolutely terrifying. Definitely one of Nintendo's most terrifying characters.

He is B I G!

While I still have yet to figure out the angle culling, it turns out there is a Blender 2.91 build with an official POM implementation, granted it still seems to be a WIP in this build since you can see some weird errors going on around the edges, but it looks closer to something you'd see in Unreal Engine. totally not downloading this just to rig him to do fortnite dances

@Some1_On_TheInternet, how'd you do that?

@Jasper7438 From what I could tell, the fins use angle culling (using an angle of around 0.67 or less iirc?) to limit where it can be seen from. I don't know how to go about recreating it in blender though. You can achieve a somewhat similar looking effect by rendering the fins behind the mesh, but its not quite the same.

I attempted to make Mr. Grizz's fur, but something seems...off.

@Spletz47 Well, the fin in "hoian_fur_parallax_fin" is there because they're using the fins method for fur at the very least (albeit with some very weird LOD going on). You can achieve something similar to it by extruding the edges of the meshes and using a UV map with reset projection for the fur transparency.

@Annixon Oh god you're right

@SonicFan I know what you did, but how did you do it?
It looks like what @Jasper7438 was talking about. I don't know what to google to figure it out lol.
I've been digging right through the files of the game and the shader hoian_fur_parallax_fin and I haven't been able to find anything useful yet.

oh god i can see it

the grizz model after defeating him looks like those robloxian high school models

my attempt at mr grizz fur in blender

@Jasper - Absolutely amazing setup, I was wondering how to get the fur normal map on specific areas on the body and this is perfect, thank you so much! The fur card image also answers what the opacity texture included was for, I was wondering what that texture was used for for the longest time...
I attempted the POM with the fur, as well as the coloration with the fur on the body with the main fur by using these free nodes and some of Jasper's setup. I set up the model like this, which ended up having the model look like this. NOTE: Bring the roughness up to 0.9 on the Principled BSDF, that makes it look a lot less glossy. (Do note I'm only doing the fur here, all the other parts are hidden). Also, adjust the vibrance on HSV value from after the alb and ao mixer if you want to change the brightness of the main body. I can't really get the softness/weird lines on the outmost layer of the fur, but I'm kinda new/blender doesn't have an official POM node so I kinda just have to go with this. I also don't know exactly how I'd do the fur cards too, and that seems especially painful with how it works in-game. Someone feel free to one-up me though.
Edit 3: This should be a lot less intensive and much more accurate to the fur scale.
