@CopperTheFox: It's used in the second missions specifically (the ones where you need to collect 100 rings). For regular stages, it replaces the "Goal" ring at the end, and for Emerald-hunting stages it spawns near the start if you get hurt to let you reset the stage, giving you another chance at completing the mission.
