The silly dude

If you want to get technical, any game that uses 3D space uses models, even ones that appear to be purely sprites. If they are in a 3D environment, they need to be applied to a plane. TTYD's models actually fit the conventions of a typical game model more than CS and TOK's, since they actually use rigs and occupy a range of space in all directions (thanks to the layering). On a technical level, there is no difference between the format of Mario and Cortez. Mario just uses planes that all face the same direction to give the illusion of 2D.
