The early models for this game look a LOT like the N64 era renders.
So at some stage, they were considering using the Melee designs as their GCN era design. I'm glad they didn't do that, Smash Bros. has never done the Mario characters justice, except maybe Rosalina and those who never really had much of a Smash-specific redesign like Yoshi. The one on the right doesn't look that bad tho.
This reminds me of Melee Bowser. Especially the one on the left.
