My method was a little difficult and scrapped together. I had to use a different tool by the same developer as Melonripper called Apicula which is the only public tool that can get proper NSBMD files from this game, as far as I'm aware. Unfortunately, instead of just using the extract function on the rom.bin file, I had to make memory dumps with Desmune and extract from there. It wasn't an exact science either because it was totally up to chance whether I would get the model files I wanted or not, and more often than not their textures would be corrupted and I would keep having to try again and hope I had better luck. Apicula unfortunately also makes this hard as you can't combine or overwrite folders and files with it and since it's command line it made selecting files extra tedious. Today, though, you could probably get away with using Melonripper for textures and doing the rest the other way for accuracy.

+the_boi You can use MelonRipper: https://github.com/scurest/melonDS/releases/download/MelonRipperBuild/melonDS-MelonRipper.zip

how they can rip models from this game?, i tried ripping from the .nds but there is just a "rom.bin"...

i dunno, once my uploads got approved, the mods just resorted it

How are we supposed to tell the guests apart from the residents now?!

wait how are there pending models? I wonder what they look like...

I really have no clue how I missed this page, this is one of my favorite games.
also, I think someone's been working on extracting from rom.bin so hopefully we won't have to rely on memory dumps soon
