@Doc von Schmeltwick - Yeah. What's funny is that the official Super Mario Encyclopedia book states that the actual Toad appears in the original NSMB, which is false (aside from promotional artwork). The Toadsworth duplicates were used instead. It's safe to say that was a conscious choice because of limitations.
@Papappa In the Toad Houses, and also technically the little running figures in the opening were just copies of this model.
