• Having separate meshes makes it easier to rig due to how the parts intersect.
• Having round intersecting meshes makes it possible to move the parts around in a cartoony way without deforming the model.
• Using textures for material colors is part of our submission guidelines, because not all programs export/import colors the same way.

If you're talking about meshes, I made it easy to rig for people. I've had trouble exporting rigs.
